Jeff Bezos Says He Will Donate His Wealth to Charity While Amazon Employees Are Facing Massive Layoffs

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, currently the fourth richest person in the world, announced on Monday that he plans to donate most of his wealth to charity within his lifetime.

In an interview with CNN, Bezos, who has an estimated net worth of $124.1 billion, shared that he intends to donate the majority of his wealth to various charitable causes, primarily organizations fighting climate change and to individuals who can unify humanity in this divisive time.

Philanthropy “is really hard,” Bezos said. “We’re building the capacity to be able to give away this money.”

However, hours after the interview aired, reports began circling that Amazon, which Bezos holds a 10 percent stake in, was planning on laying off roughly 10,000 employees starting this week. The cuts would be the largest in Amazon’s history, and would primarily impact Amazon’s devices organization, retail division and human resources.

This isn’t the first cut Amazon employees have faced, and they aren’t even the first ones to do it this fiscal quarter. The tech is world is in a state of chaos while two of its most prominent figures, Bezos and Elon Musk, are focusing elsewhere. Thousands of employees at Twitter, Meta, Snap and more have been fired in recent months due to budget cuts and restraints.

Perhaps some of Bezos money can go toward unemployment?
