One rabbi who uses psychedelics, like mushrooms, as a spiritual connection has had charges dropped against him, after Coloradans voted to legalize the use of psilocybin.
On Nov. 8, residents in Colorado voted to decriminalize the possession and use of psychedelic mushrooms and fungi for users over the age of 21.
Ben Gorelick is the founder of Sacred Tribe, which he says is a group of Jewish seekers who get together to feel the fullest human emotional experience.
After failing to connect spiritually with a seminary, Gorelick found Kabbalah, an ancient Jewish tradition which means “mysticism” or “occult knowledge.
Reform Judaism, says Kabbalists look towards the “essence” of God and also believe that “true knowledge and understanding of that inner, mysterious process is obtainable, and through that knowledge, the greatest intimacy with God can be attained.”
The Jerusalem Post reported that Gorelick was charged in February for possessing a controlled substance with intent to manufacture or distribute it. At the time, that was a felony with mandatory prison time.
Now that the use of psilocybin is legal, all charges have been dropped against Gorelick. He told the Denver Post, “It’s been a long year for the community, it’s been a long year for us and we look forward to getting back to practicing our religion which is what the whole point of this is.”
Gorelick wrote on The Sacred Tribe’s Facebook page that this was just the beginning. He thanked his community for standing strong in support of his convictions and says his goal is to codify their religious exemption.
As followers of Jesus Christ we look to the Scripture for truth and knowledge. As our hunger and desire to know God more intimately grows, we know that we have the Holy Spirit to lead us and guide us in a deeper relationship with God.
Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
The use of psychedelics has grown with more people ‘micro-dosing’ mushrooms to attain healing from depression and anxiety in therapeutic settings. ‘Micro-dosing’ has become commonplace for people who are trying to function in their daily lives.
The growing desire for a true genuine spiritual connection seems to be growing and becoming more normal across the world. Now is the time for the body of Christ to shine the light of Jesus to those who are looking for purpose.
Jesus is the one who heals our pain and trauma and fulfills our soul. First Peter 1:3 says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has give us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”
