BBC offices in India searched: Is the government silencing critics?

Indian tax officials have searched the BBC’s offices in New Delhi and Mumbai, weeks after it showed a documentary critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the U.K. The two-part documentary examined Modi’s role during the 2002 anti-Muslim riots in the western state of Gujarat, where he was chief minister at the time. More than 1,000 people were killed in the violence. The BBC said it was cooperating fully with Indian tax authorities, who declined to comment. Rights groups and opposition politicians denounced the searches as an attempt to intimidate the media. India banned the documentary from being shown in the country last month.
