A new guide on environmental protection is the result of a collaboration between science and spirituality.

“Our Common Home: A Guide to Caring for Our Planet,” released on February 14, was created by the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development and the Stockholm Environment Institute.

Inspired by Pope Francis’ 2015 Laudato Si’, quotations from the encyclical appear throughout the guide. The 11-page guide “sets out essential facts and solutions on key topics, along with advice on how communities can respond.”

“We are at a critical historical moment where actions today will determine the fate of generations to come. The challenge ahead is monumental; we need nothing short of a ‘bold cultural revolution’ (Laudato Si’ 114) to respond to it adequately,” Cardinal Michael Czerny, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, said in a press release announcing the guide’s publication. “For this reason, the guidebook we offer today to local churches and community groups represents an important and hopeful collaboration between two great sectors: that of science, and that of faith.”

After summarizing the current situation regarding the climate, biodiversity and ecosystems, water, air, food and human consumption, the guide explains what changes are needed to address negative trends and provides action items and questions for reflection within each area of concern.

“Robust evidence is as crucial as ever, but what drives people’s actions is their values, and their sense of their place in the world. By combining our organizations’ respective strengths, we have produced a booklet that I believe will be very compelling and useful to readers,” SEI’s Executive Director Måns Nilsson said in the press release.
