Battle rages on in Sudan as mass airlifts rescue foreign nationals

Foreign governments evacuated diplomats, staff, and others from Sudan on Sunday as rival generals battled for a ninth day with no sign of a truce that had been declared for a major Muslim holiday.

Sudan army chief, Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan and Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, the leader of the powerful paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, have so far appeared determined to fight to the end. The rival generals came to power after a pro-democracy uprising led to the 2019 ouster of former strongman Omar al-Bashir. In 2021, the generals joined forces to seize power in a coup.

The current violence came after Mr. Burhan and Mr. Dagalo fell out over a recent internationally brokered deal with democracy activists that was meant to incorporate the RSF into the military and eventually lead to democratic civilian rule.
