DOJ Indicts Over 1,030 in Jan 6 Capitol Riot Probe – American Faith

Twenty-eight months following the unsettling events of January 6th, 2021 at the U.S. Capitol, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has revealed a significant update on the ongoing investigations.

Over 1,030 individuals have now been indicted in connection to the day’s happenings, with approximately 570 of them having admitted guilt, according to a report from Axios.

This wide-ranging federal investigation has resulted in a series of high-profile arrests and convictions.

However, former President Trump and his supporters have openly criticized the DOJ, alleging that the prosecutions have not been carried out impartially.

In a recent CNN town hall, Trump promised that “a couple of them probably got out of control,” and would absolve some the individuals of their crimes if he were to regain office.

On the day of the Capitol unrest, Trump tweeted to his followers at 2:13 pm “to remain peaceful. No violence! Remember, WE are the Party of Law & Order – respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you!”

The DOJ’s breakdown of the charges is as follows:

The vast majority of the defendants, numbering over 900, are facing accusations of unlawfully entering or remaining in a federally restricted building or property.

Of this number, 103 individuals have been charged with bringing a potentially lethal weapon into a restricted zone.

Assault charges have been laid against 346 individuals, with allegations of resisting or obstructing officers or employees.

In a more serious vein, 108 individuals among them have been charged with wielding a deadly weapon or causing significant bodily harm to an officer.

In addition, 309 persons have been indicted for illicitly obstructing, influencing, or attempting to impede an official proceeding.

Conspiracy charges have been brought against 55 individuals.

These charges include an array of alleged actions, from obstructing a congressional proceeding, impeding law enforcement during civil disorder, and conspiring to injure an officer.

Regarding pleas, a total of 149 defendants have admitted guilt to felony charges.

This includes 61 individuals who pleaded guilty to assaulting law enforcement officers and four who accepted charges of seditious conspiracy.

On the other hand, 421 individuals admitted to misdemeanor charges.

The DOJ also noted that 78 individuals have been declared guilty at trials where the facts were contested.

In contrast, 16 were convicted following an agreement on the set of facts pertaining to their cases.
