Three New Books Available From Nurturing Faith Books

A novel and two commentaries are the latest arrivals at Good Faith Media’s bookstore.

Merrill Davies chronicles one man’s work to make meaning out of his life in the 20th century, while Tony W. Cartledge gives access to a multitude of ideas, insights, and illustrations for those who heed the call to equip disciples to follow more faithfully in the ways of Jesus.

Together, Davies and Cartledge deliver three new offerings from Nurturing Faith Books, the publishing imprint of Good Faith Media.

Merrill Davies’ latest Nurturing Faith book, Tulsa Times, is based on a true story and demonstrates the powerful witness of personal determination.

Angry and betrayed, Jonny disappears from his job in Michigan in 1929 and drives his T-model Ford west, hoping to leave his troubles behind. He arrives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with nothing except a few clothes and his last paycheck. His admirable work ethic leads him to work in both the oil fields and a local hospital, but his lack of education holds him to the lowest-paying jobs.

During his seven years in Tulsa, Jonny watches people struggle with dust storms and depression-era economics. He buys shoes for children in soup lines and enjoys going to Cain’s Ballroom and hearing Bob Wills in the evenings. A dear friend helps him understand that he can’t run away from his troubles.

When his friend dies of dust pneumonia, he decides to return to his Kentucky home, where he has recently been declared dead. Amidst family and friends who are not always sympathetic with his plight, he begins the long journey toward a better life.

Merrill Davies is a retired high school English teacher. This is her sixth novel, and she has published one book of devotional poetry.

Nurturing Faith Commentary: Year B, Volume 1 by Tony W. Cartledge focuses on the Seasons of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany. Nurturing Faith Commentary: Year B, Volume 2 focuses on the Seasons of Lent, Easter, and Pentecost.

Unique in their intent and content, these resources offer teaching, preaching, and learning aids from a broad swath of carefully explored biblical texts found in the Revised Common Lectionary.

The purpose of these studies goes beyond gaining knowledge — although the insights are plentiful — to discovering the inspiration and fresh possibilities for living out biblical truth in one’s daily experiences and spheres of influence.

“Tony Cartledge brings the mind of a scholar, the heart of a pastor, and the writing skills of an experienced author to this extensive yet accessible guide,” said John D. Pierce, Executive Editor and Publisher for Good Faith Media. “Rooted in a trusted weekly Bible study, scholarly and applicable lessons are provided for every possible Sunday of the stated period of the Christian Year.”

Tony Cartledge is contributing editor and curriculum writer for Nurturing Faith Journal & Bible Studies, a resource of Good Faith Media. He is also professor of Old Testament at Campbell University Divinity School, where he teaches writing, archaeology, preaching and ministry classes.

Year A, Volume 1, covering the lectionary texts for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, was released in August 2022.

Year A, Volume 2, published in September 2022, engages the texts for Lent, Easter, and Pentecost.
