Conservative MP threatened by China calls for Trudeau minister to resign from CCP-linked position – LifeSite

OTTAWA, Ontario (LifeSiteNews) –– A Canadian MP who was personally threatened multiple times by an alleged agent of the Communist Chinese Party (CCP) has called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault to resign for accepting an appointment on a Chinese climate panel.

“Ten years ago it was reasonable for Western gov’ts to propose cooperation with China on GHG emissions. Xi had just become leader. The IEA & many gov’ts, including Harper’s, thought global coal demand would peak in 2013 & decline from there.” began Conservative Party of Canada MP Michael Chong on X, formerly Twitter.

“Western gov’ts assumed China would work in good faith on climate change & GHG emissions. But over the last decade, Beijing’s actions demonstrate it’s not working in good faith. It’s working furiously to increase GHG emissions,” continued Chong, adding that it would appear China is “not working in good faith” because it burns more coal than all other countries combined.

“In light of these facts & in light of Beijing’s belligerence toward Canada (jailing of the two Michaels, meddling in our democracy, etc), it’s unfathomable why the Trudeau government continues to ‘cooperate’ with Beijing on climate change & lend Canada’s good name,” charged the MP.

“[Environment and Climate Change] Minister [Stephen] Guilbeault sits as Executive Vice-Chairman of Beijing’s China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development. The Trudeau government also provides $16 million to this organization,” Chong stated.

“The Trudeau government is lending Canada’s good name to Beijing and giving it the veneer of respectability of doing something on climate change. That’s why we are calling on Minister Guilbeault to resign as Executive Vice-Chairman of Beijing’s Council and for the Trudeau government to cancel further funding,” he concluded.

Last week, LifeSiteNews reported on Conservative MPs who took issue with Guilbeault accepting an invitation to go to China for an official state visit despite the ongoing fallout from Beijing’s alleged meddling in Canada’s elections,.

Guilbeault is clearly listed on the CCICED’s website as its executive vice chairperson, a position which sits directly under Communist China’s Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang.

In May, Chong disclosed that he has been personally threatened multiple times by who he believed to be a diplomat named Zhao Wei who was acting as an agent of Communist China. Chong said the threats were concerning enough that he had to call the police out of concern for his safety.

After the scandal broke, Wei was kicked out of Canada. The Communist Chinese government retaliated by expelling a Canadian diplomat shortly thereafter.

As for Guilbeault, he will be in China from August 28 to 30.

Canadian elected officials have not visited China since 2018, when relations between the two nations began to break down due to Canada’s 2019 arrest of Chinese businesswoman Meng Wanzhou, the CFO of Huawei.

Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, the “two Canadian Michaels,” were imprisoned for months by the Chinese government in what most regarded as a retaliatory measure for Canada’s arrest of Wanzhou. All three were released in 2021 to their homelands.

As part of the Huawei scandal, Canada banned the company from the nation’s telecommunications systems over security concerns.
