REGINA, Saskatchewan (LifeSiteNews) — Saskatchewan is introducing new laws around sex education in schools, including mandating that parents must be informed if their child wants to go by a different “gender.”

On August 22, Saskatchewan Education Minister Dustin Duncan announced new “Parental Inclusion and Consent Policies,” which mandate parents be informed if their child wants to identify as a different name or “gender,” allow parents to opt their kids out of sex-ed, and ban third party presentations from groups including Planned Parenthood.  

“Our government has heard the concerns raised by Saskatchewan parents about needing to be notified and included in their children’s education in these important areas,” Duncan said in a press release. 

“We also determined that while all of Saskatchewan’s school divisions had policies dealing with these matters, those policies varied from one division to another, so it was important to standardize these policies and ensure consistency of parental inclusion, no matter where your child goes to school,” he added.  

“Parent/guardian involvement is critical in every student’s education,” Duncan declared. “Schools will continue to ensure safe learning environments where all students feel included, protected and respected.” 

Under the new laws, schools must receive permission from a parent or guardian to use a different name or gender for students under the age of 16 in school. 

A Saskatchewan teacher wishing to remain anonymous told LifeSiteNews that she supports the decision to keep parents informed.  

“I fear that we are not supporting students or parents when we keep secrets,” she explained. “We have many students using alternate names, which sometimes changes frequently during the year, and then are asked by parents if we were aware of the changes after the fact. I feel responsible for keeping the secret and I don’t think it’s fair. I think schools are already taking on too many ‘parent roles’ and it’s important that parents play the ‘parent role’ not teachers!” 

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe supported Duncan’s decision on X, formerly known as Twitter, writing, “Parents must be included in all important decisions involving their children.”

Duncan’s defense of parental rights comes just months after New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs was condemned by the LGBT mob for reviewing the province’s Gender Identity policy, as it allowed schools to hide students’ “transgender” status from parents.    

“For [a desire to be identified with the opposite sex] purposefully to be hidden from the parents, that’s a problem,” Higgs told reporters, referring to his desire to change Policy 713, which currently requires children give consent for their parents to be informed if they decide to “change” their gender at school.    

Under the new policy, parental consent would be necessary for teachers to use different names or pronouns for students under age 16.     

In early August, pro-LGBT politicians tried unsuccessfully to remove Higgs from office, but Progressive Conservative party members revealed that Higgs has the support of the “silent majority” in his decision to protect children and parents. 

Saskatchewan’s new laws go a step further than New Brunswick’s by banning all sexual education presentations and materials from third-party organizations, “as the ministry undertakes review of educational resources to ensure alignment with curriculum outcomes.”  

Now, only teachers employed at schools can present sexual education materials in the classroom, with the exception of professionals employed by government ministries or the Saskatchewan Health Authority. 

Furthermore, parents must be informed about the sexual health education curriculum and have the option to opt out of it for their child.  

The decision to ban third party presentations comes after ninth graders at Lumsden High School were recently given pornographic cards during an in-school Planned Parenthood presentation.  

At the time, Duncan promised he “will be directing Boards of Education administration to suspend for the time being the work in schools of Planned Parenthood as it relates to their involvement in health and wellness courses, as well as the material that they have produced, or they’re affiliated organizations have produced.”  

Recently, western provinces seem to be increasingly defending children and parents against the LGBT mob. Last week, Premier of Manitoba Heather Stefanson promised that, if re-elected this fall, she too will enhance parental rights by mandating that schools inform parents if their child wants to identify as a different “gender.” 

While LGBT activists have gone after the likes of Higgs and Moe for their slight pushback against gender ideology, a recent Leger poll has shown that Canadians in general are in favor of supporting parental rights in education, especially in regards to what material is being shared with children.
