Widespread Effort to Keep Trump Off 2024 Ballot Using 14th Amendment
Throughout the country, legal efforts are getting underway to try to keep former President Trump’s name off the 2024 ballot, via the 14th Amendment. Two of the latest are Connecticut and Colorado.
The 14th Amendment was crafted after the Civil War to prohibit those who had been in armed rebellion against the United States from holding office. You know, Confederates. The specific wording in Section 3 is: “no person shall … hold any office … who, having previously taken an oath … shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against” the U.S. or given “aid and comfort to the enemies thereof.”
Some now claim that Trump led an “insurrection” on January 6 and gave aid and comfort to those who stormed the Capitol.
Obviously, it is absurd on its face to accuse the same guy who wanted 10,000 National Guard troops protecting the Capitol of wanting to take over the Capitol. But facts and common sense, let alone the law and our democratic tradition, have no place in this effort.
Constitutional scholar (and liberal) Jonathan Turley calls the attempt to keep Trump off the ballot “the single most dangerous legal theory” he’s heard in decades.

Speaking of Trump, mark High Noon, September 14 on your calendar. Megyn Kelly announced she will be interviewing the former president on her Sirius XM show. Kelly and Trump famously tangled in the first GOP debate of the 2016 campaign. This is their first rematch in seven years. She’s promising it’ll be “spicy and tough, but it’s going to be good.”

Update: Biden Tests Negative Again for COVID, Gets Thumbs Up for Foreign Travel
Joe Biden tested negative again for COVID, as did First Lady Jill Biden, and thus will be able to fly off to Vietnam and next week’s Group of 20 Summit in India.
Biden’s been getting some heat for flouting CDC COVID protocols by taking his mask off during public appearances even though he may have been exposed to the virus. He even joked about disregarding the recommendation during an address Wednesday. “I’m clear across the board. But they keep telling me, because this has to be 10 days or something, I’ve got to keep wearing it. But don’t tell them I didn’t have it on when I walked in.”
Uh, I think you just did.
Liberty Safe Backtracks After FBI Cooperation Backlash
Liberty Safe proved neither, in the eyes of critics, when news broke that the company gave the FBI an access code to a J6 suspect’s safe. Nathan Hughes of Arkansas was on Capitol Hill on J6, and the FBI raided his home last week. At first, Liberty Safe — America’s top seller of gun safes — defended its actions, saying it handed over the code when the FBI offered proof of a valid warrant.

The backlash was ferocious. Had Liberty Safe just had a Bud Light moment, betraying their core consumers? The company acted quickly to try to stem the growing fury. They’ve announced they will now be giving customers the option of having their access code deleted from Liberty Safe’s system, so Liberty Safe won’t be able to hand over the code even if there’s a warrant. (The downside is, you’d better not lose your combination.) Will this stop the backlash?

Sound of Freedom Rocking Latin America
The anti-child trafficking film Sound of Freedom has opened big in Latin America, dominating in 18 countries, according to distributor Angel Studios. The film sold 2 million advance tickets in just four days.
The movie also opened in New Zealand, where it rocketed to #1. In Australia, the film came in second at the box office. In August, box office expert Paul Ferrer told Newsweek he didn’t think the movie would do well internationally. Once again, Sound of Freedom proved the critics and naysayers wrong.
Now that the summer movie season is over, we can do the tally. According to Box Office Mojo, as of September 3, Sound of Freedom had banked $181,967,046, domestically. That means it landed in the summer movie sweepstakes ahead of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, and the latest Fast & Furious and Transformers flicks.
The Boss on the Mend
It’s long been common wisdom that nothing can beat a live Bruce Springsteen show. Well, apparently peptic ulcer disease can. The “heartbroken” Boss has been forced to postpone the September dates for his new tour. After cancelling in Philly, the 73-year-old gutted out three stadium shows in Jersey before doctors ordered the rock-n-roll legend to unplug the guitar for a month to heal. Thankfully, as AP reports, the condition is easily treatable and Bruce and the E Street Band will be back on the road in October.
Glad he’s going to be okay. My hands still hurt from those four-hour shows in 1980.
