The Brew: A Year’s Paid Leave for Male Menopause? And Women Aren’t the Only Ones Who Have Menstrual Cycles? Those Crazy Brits – The Stream

Happy Tuesday!

We’ve got a piping hot Brew for you. So let’s get pouring.

But first …

A Public Note to The Stream Staff

As Managing Editor and Interim Editor-in-Chief of The Stream, I am grateful that I know you will have my back — as I yours — should trouble arise. However, I want it on the record that should I ever do anything foolhardy in public, DO NOT accuse those harping on my mistake of being Nazis. Unless, of course, they happen to be welcomed guests of the Canadian parliament.

For example — just pulling something out of the air — should I set off a fire alarm forcing a delay in congressional business, then say I thought pulling the alarm would open a door I needed to get through, I don’t want you to share a talking point that the “Nazi Republicans” are responsible for the hubbub and mockery.

That would leave me looking like a conniving idiot trying to duck responsibility.

Just ask Rep. Jamaal Bowman. He deliberately set off a fire alarm in a Cannon House Office Building Saturday, he claims because he was rushing to a vote. Rather than take his lumps, Bowman’s office sent out a request to fellow Democrats, urging their support in this fire alarm fiasco. The list, leaked to Politico, includes this odious talking point: “I believe Congressman Bowman when he says this was an accident. Republicans need to instead focus their energy on the Nazi members of their party before anything else.”

After the leak was published, Bowman tried retreating from the controversy. If he had moved that fast Saturday, he wouldn’t have needed to pull the fire alarm. (If you accept his explanation.)

“I just became aware that in our messaging guidance, there was inappropriate use of the term Nazi without my consent. I condemn the use of the term Nazi out of its precise definition. It is important to specify the term Nazi to refer to members of the Nazi party & neo-Nazis.”

Notice that he does not actually apologize for his staff, in his name, calling half of America “Nazis.”

We gotta do better than demonize others for our dumb moves.

Trump Civil Fraud Trial Underway in New York City

The massive, coordinated effort to keep Donald Trump in a courtroom and off the campaign trail began yesterday in New York City. This one is the $250 million civil fraud case brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James which aims to destroy his New York business empire. James, of course, ran on the promise of getting the former president. Her claim is that the Trump Organization defrauded banks by overvaluing his assets. Except the banks aren’t saying Trump defrauded anybody. They did their diligence, they made the loans, they got paid … and got to boast to their pals about being in business with The Donald.

The silliness of this case was on full display last week when the judge declared that Trump’s waterfront (on both sides) 20-acre Mar-a-Lago estate was worth only $18 million. Maybe you’ve seen the numbers. You’ve got plots of ground in the neighborhood asking $200 million. Five years ago, Forbes put the value of Mar-a-Lago at $180 million and the value has only increased. The Rush Limbaugh property, which is on 1/10th the land and doesn’t have a golf course resort tied into it runs about $155 million. A Palm Beach realtor told the New York Post the property is worth at least $300 million.

But at least the judge is having a good time of it. “I’m ready for my close-up, Mr. Biden.”

Lovin’ that camera like a Karadashian.

Before his appearance in court, Trump launched an 8-minute defense of his business and a broadside against James, the judge and the Biden DOJ, which Trump insists is coordinating all the legal cases being brought against him.

Speaking of Trump and courts, the Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by a small time presidential candidate to get Trump’s name tossed off the ballot. Texas tax consultant John Anthony Castro tried claiming Trump was ineligible under the 14th Amendment because of his role in J6. An argument every court that has heard it has rejected.

Newsom Names Former Harris Advisor to Fill Feinstein’s Senate Seat

So much for a Senator Oprah. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has named veteran Democratic strategist, union activist and abortion pusher Laphonza Butler to fill out the rest of Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s term. Butler was a senior advisor on Kamala Harris’ disastrous presidential campaign. Seems like any advice that wasn’t “DON’T RUN!” would disqualify Butler for the prestigious Senate gig … but she fulfills the two qualifications Newsom had said he’d be looking for: She’s black and she’s female. Butler’s also a lesbian, so he gets to check off that box too. In fact, Newsom celebrates, ”She will make history — becoming the first Black lesbian to openly serve in the U.S. Senate.”

Here’s what’s kind of odd. As Not the Bee notes, Butler actually lives in Maryland, running the abortion rights group Emily’s List. And only actually lived in California for a decade. “Are you telling me Gavin couldn’t find a single black lesbian who grew up in California or currently lives among Californians to represent Californians??” Butler quickly deleted online evidence of her being a Maryland resident.

In an age when males are winning female beauty pageants and being named homecoming queen, who’s going to bat a false eyelash that California will be repped by a non-Californian?

Headlines That Can’t Be, But Are: “UK Health Service Will Give a Year Paid Leave for ‘Male Menopause’”

England’s National Health Service Trust (HNS) is offering employees up to one year off to deal with the problems of “male menopause.”

“We provide occupational sick pay for up to 12 months based on service length. That will support absences which may result from symptoms of the andropause or where time off for medical appointments is required.”

“As well as having menopause guidance we also support anyone within the organisation who is affected directly or indirectly by the andropause [male menopause],”

Oh, there’s more, reports the National Pulse. The British General Medical Council also recently updated its internal policies to drop the idea that women alone suffer from menopause. They now use the term “individuals experiencing the menopause.” The greatest lie in medicine used to be, “This won’t hurt a bit.” Now it’s, “Sure, men can have menstrual cycles.”
