Criticism Over Biden’s Reference to Hispanic Migrants as ‘Voters’ – American Faith

President Biden’s remarks during an interview on a Spanish-speaking radio show this week sparked controversy when he appeared to refer to Hispanic migrants as potential “voters” instead of citizens.

“It’s even a bigger influx now in terms of Hispanic voters, or Hispanic citizens, who want to become citizens,” Biden said, addressing the current migrant crisis.

He compared the current immigration wave to the 1840s Irish migration, highlighting the plight of Irish Catholics during the famine. “The Hispanic community is part of the future of America,” Biden emphasized, underscoring the importance of Spanish speakers in schools and their role in shaping the nation’s future.

Critics swiftly seized on Biden’s comments, interpreting them as a “Freudian slip” suggesting an electoral motive behind immigration policy decisions.

“Oops! Freudian slip,” remarked New York Post columnist and Fox News contributor Miranda Devine.

“Is he sleeping?” asked RNC rapid response director Jake Schneider. “Why is he talking like this? Unless…”

In response to criticism, a White House spokesperson reiterated the legal restrictions, noting, “Only American citizens can vote in federal elections.” This clarification followed comments by journalists and commentators who suggested Biden’s remarks hinted at electoral strategy behind immigration policy.
