Praying for America’s Return  – Intercessors for America

Reading Time: 5 minutes

While many are praying for America to be made great again, are we genuinely great without God at the center of our nation’s work? It’s time for this nation to return to the Lord with wholehearted worship and obedience. If there is hope for this nation, it will be found in Jesus Christ, called the hope of the nations (see Matthew 12:18-21).

Pray for a restoration of righteousness.

Psalm 19:7 says, “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the decrees of the Lord are sure, making wise the simple.” America was founded on biblical principles. The further we stray from God’s Word, the deeper we fall into moral decay. Righteousness equals right standing with God, and we are told to pursue righteousness (see 2 Timothy 2:22, Matthew 6:33, 1 Timothy 6:11-12).

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people (Proverbs 14:34 ESV).

Pray for a restoration of the sanctity of life.

Life is a sacred gift. Every life has value in the eyes of its Creator because we are created in His image. Forgive us, Lord, for not giving the preborn the honor and value they deserve. Open our eyes to see the beauty of life and protect those in their mother’s womb.

Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: “I am the Lord, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself (Isaiah 44:24 ESV).

Pray for a restoration of biblical family values.

Healthy families are fundamental to society and our nation. The covenant of marriage and parenthood is intended to reflect God’s nature. As we love and disciple our children in the faith, they pass those godly values down the lineage. Just as a godly legacy can be passed down, so can brokenness. Those who come from brokenness can sometimes harm their families and others, negatively impacting society. Lord, our families need you.

He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What, therefore, God has joined together, let man not separate (Matthew 19:4-6 ESV).

Pray for a restoration of wealth and prosperity.

God desires us to prosper and gives us the power to create wealth (see Deuteronomy 8:18). We are called to be good stewards, share wealth, and bless others. However, prosperity isn’t only about financial gain. God also desires our souls and cities to prosper (see 3 John 1-2, Jeremiah 29:7). Our prosperity is linked with our obedience. We must obey the Lord in all things.

And if you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God. Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out (Deuteronomy 28:1-6 ESV).

Pray for God to restore order to the border.

God gave borders to protect our nation. As these hedges are removed, we see the rise of lawlessness in the land. The effects of illegal immigration are impacting us economically and decreasing our safety as a nation. Drug, human, and sex trafficking thrive through open borders. Terrorists can find their way in with ease. Lord, help us. Restore your hedge of protection to our nation and keep us hedged in the shadow of your wings.

For He has strengthened the bars of your gates;
He has blessed your children within you.
He makes peace in your borders,
And fills you with the finest wheat. (Psalm 147:13-14).

Pray for restoration in the church and revival in our nation.

Generations have long prayed for revival in America. To see this, the Church has to be restored to its former glory, where Christ is in His rightful place as the head of the church (see Colossians 1:18). We want revival, but we must be restored. We want restoration, but we must first be reconciled to God and one another (see 2 Corinthians 5:19-20). How can we preach reconciliation to the lost when we are so divided and unforgiving to one another as believers? Lord, help us as a Church to love another as you have loved us.

Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved! O Lord God of hosts, how long will you be angry with your people’s prayers? You have fed them with the bread of tears and given them tears to drink in full measure. You make us an object of contention for our neighbors, and our enemies laugh among themselves. Restore us, O God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved! (Psalm 80:3-7 ESV).

Pray for true justice to be restored in America.

Justice reveals God’s character. Justice matters so much to God that He calls us to do justly (see Micah 6:8). This applies to our personal lives, corporate lives, and government affairs. Biblical justice is not about our opinions; God’s Word gives us clear instructions on what is morally right and wrong. However, we tend to selfishly muddy the waters of justice to fit our needs and the culture. There is so much injustice that it’s easy to lose heart. Lord, help us be faithful in our prayers because You are the God of justice.

And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them?  I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth? (Luke 18:7-8 ESV).

Pray for restoration in our education systems.

There was once a time when the Bible was taught in school, and prayer was welcomed. God was part of our children’s education in American public schools. Little by little, we saw it stripped away, and with it, a new ungodly norm was accepted. Our children are being instructed to shun biblical truths. Academics are no longer critical; now, woke culture and perversion are being forced on our children. Colleges have become socialist training grounds. Lord, restore the education system, however you desire.

See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ (Colossians 2:8 ESV).

Pray for Israel.

Israel will always be at the center of God’s timetable. What happens in Israel should concern every believer. We are called to intercede despite what is happening. God’s plan for Israel has not changed, and if we bless Israel, we, as a nation, will reap blessings, too. Remember that salvation came to us because of the Jews and that we have been grafted in.

On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent You who put the Lord in remembrance, take no rest, and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth (Isaiah 62:6-7).

Pray for U.S. military.

The threat of heading into war is a real threat we should be praying about. Praying for our military is a must. At any moment, they can be deployed to service. They need our prayer-covering. Lord, protect and favor them, bless their families, and give them victory.

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust (Psalm 91:1-2 NIV).
