Military Most Favorable U.S. Institution

The U.S. military is the most highly respected institution in the country, according to results from the latest Harvard CAPS/Harris poll. The monthly survey, which measures Americans’ views on varying subjects related to politics and domestic and foreign affairs, presented respondents with the names of twenty institutions and asked for their impression of each institution.

Only 11% of respondents have an unfavorable view of the military, as opposed to 80% who think positively. Only three other U.S.-based institutions have a 50% or higher favorable rating: the police (65%), Facebook (57%), and the FBI (53%). Half (50%) of survey participants see the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in a positive light.

Fox News has the highest favorable rating (48%) of the three major cable news networks, edging out CNN (46%) and MSNBC (40%).

On the international front, Hamas, at 8%, has the lowest favorability rating. The Palestinian Authority is viewed positively by 12% of respondents and China by 17%.

Less than half of respondents view the U.S. Supreme Court and the Department of Justice favorably, at 47% and 43%, respectively. MAGA Republicans are viewed favorably by 36%.

The survey also measured feelings about the economy, immigration, presidential candidates, and the Israel-Hamas war. It was conducted between July 26 and 28, a week after the Republican National Convention and Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential election.
