The Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) is seeking a contract to provide gender reassignment surgeries at two Federal Medical Centers (FMC) in Fort Worth, Texas.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by the Department of Justice (DOJ) to offer comprehensive medical care for inmates with complex medical needs, including gender-affirming surgery.
“The Federal Bureau of Prisons is pursuing a contract for gender-affirming surgery in Texas, as the Dallas-Fort Worth area is home to both male and female Federal Medical Centers,” Randilee Giamusso, a spokesperson for FBOP said.
“This will allow us to provide specialized and comprehensive care at a facility already equipped to care for individuals with complex medical considerations.”
The contract follows a previous DOJ agreement to develop a transgender-specific programming curriculum for U.S. prisons, with a $1.5 million payment made to The Change Companies for this initiative.
