Open letter to President Trump: For the sake of the nation, please reaffirm the sanctity of life – LifeSite

(The Remnant) — Dear President Trump,

As you know, many of your most ardent supporters are Catholics who consider their Catholic faith to be the most important part of their lives. As Catholics, we are grateful to you not only for your work to help overturn Roe v. Wade and support the sanctity of life, but also for your efforts to help make our nation one that allows us to work hard and raise our families with minimal interference from the increasingly evil forces that hate you and us. Thank you for what you have done already for our nation, and for what we hope you will do in the future.

As you also know, our common enemies are doing all they can to undermine you: frivolous lawsuits, fake polls, censorship, media collusion, and even an assassination attempt. In reality, though, these overt attempts to take you down only enhance your popularity because we all see the unjust hypocrisy of our common enemies.

Unfortunately, these enemies are far more successful in another line of attack: trying to drive a wedge between you and Catholics who value the sanctity of life. On sanctity of life matters, you ought to be one of the best candidates in history given (a) your strong record, and (b) the wickedness of your opponent, and that presents a problem for your enemies. Far from letting you have this victory, though, they are hellbent on trying to make that strength a liability for you.

The IVF issue is a perfect example. Many Catholics knew relatively little about IVF until a few months ago, so we cannot blame you for not having perfectly developed views on the subject. But your enemies are very clever and they made it an issue for the sole reason of nudging you to indicate support for a course of action that would drive a wedge between you and many of your Catholic voters. You understandably suggested you might support IVF because you likely saw it as a way to promote life, but the problem is that IVF involves an immoral process in which the sanctity of life is attacked through the discarding of embryos. Again, many Catholics were not familiar with the immorality of IVF, and you had no reason to know about it, but your enemies did.

Stepping back, we can see the fiendishly brilliant way that your enemies played the game with IVF:

  • They made it an issue although it had never been important in presidential elections.
  • They nudged you to support it as a way of helping families have children.
  • Then they sat back and watched as your Catholic supporters scrambled to try to determine whether they could still support you.

The upshot is that you likely received essentially no new voter support by suggesting that you might help promote IVF but you may have potentially lost many Catholic votes and the associated support from those voters.

We know that you are campaigning to regain the presidency rather than to become pope, so we do not expect you to be the perfect advocate of Catholic platforms. We are not asking you to commit political suicide by backing items that would lead to a net loss of votes and support. However, the simple reality is that the pro-life positions that you had during your presidency are still winning positions today. In fact, they are even more likely to gain and energize support today when we see that the Democrats have swung so far left on those issues. You do not need to pursue a ban on contraception, or even a federal ban on abortions, because there is absolutely no chance that you could achieve those goals even if you made them a priority. But, by the same token, there is no need for you to do anything that calls into question your support for the sanctity of life.

At this point, your ardent Catholic supporters are trying to keep you from losing more Catholic votes. We can do the best we can on that front but ultimately we would prefer to dedicate our efforts to helping you have more Catholic support than ever rather than trying to prevent you from losing what should have been guaranteed support. For this reason, we ask you to please help us help you. Please make it a priority to counter the attacks of your enemies by clearly reaffirming your unwavering support of sanctity of life positions and those who champion them.

If you do this, you will solidify and energize the support of serious Catholics, and we are convinced that it would also accomplish something far more important. If you reaffirm your support of sanctity of life positions, you will be establishing yourself on the side of God in the spiritual battle that rages around the world. As Catholics often say, God cannot be outdone in generosity: if you commit now to doing all you can to stand with Catholics in supporting the sanctity of life, God will reward you abundantly.

We are praying for you, and many of us are fighting for you. Please help us overcome our common enemies by doing all you can to stand with us on the side of God. May God bless you abundantly.
