A new Pew Research Center survey finds that majorities in three key religious groups, White evangelical Protestants (82%), White Catholics (61%) and White nonevangelical Protestants (58%), will vote for former President Donald Trump in the next presidential election. These groups have traditionally preferred the policies of the Republican Party.
On the other hand, other religious groups prefer Vice President Kamala Harris. She has the support of two- thirds or more from these registered voters: Black Protestants (86%), atheists (85%), agnostics (78%), Hispanic Catholics (65%) and Jewish voters (65%). The survey found that Harris has increased favorability with some groups when compared to Biden.
For the Christians polled for this survey, Trump receives the most support from those who attend church regularly (63% for Trump compared to 35% for Harris). These religious voters who attend less frequently or not at all still lean toward Trump (55% for Trump compared to 44% for Harris). The same is true of white evangelicals (85%) and white Catholics specifically (65%).
“These differences across religious groups reflect broader partisan patterns. White evangelicals and White Catholics mostly identify with or lean toward the Republican Party and support Trump in the current election. And the new survey shows that more Republican voters than Democratic voters say immigration will be very important to their choice this fall,” Gregory A. Smith, a senior associate director of research at Pew Research Center, wrote.
He continued, “On the other hand, most atheists, agnostics, Black Protestants and Jewish voters identify with or lean toward the Democratic Party and support Harris in the current campaign. The new survey shows that abortion is a key issue for more Democratic voters than Republican voters.”
