The team at Good Faith Media (GFM) is mourning the death of Tony Campolo, an influential author, speaker and sociologist who passed away on November 19, 2024.
On Wednesday, the Campolo Center at Eastern University released the following statement: “It is with both deep sorrow and profound gratitude that we announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Tony Campolo, a beloved husband, father, friend, educator, Christian leader, author, and tireless activist for justice and compassion. Tony died at his home in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania on November 19, 2024, at the age of 89, surrounded by his family and loved ones. His life was a testament to faith, love, and the transformative power of relationships, and his influence will be felt for generations to come.”
Campolo’s wit and prophetic spirit admonished and encouraged generations of Christians to center their lives on Jesus. For Campolo, the Christian faith was primarily about believing what Jesus said about caring for “the least of these,” particularly those on the receiving end of generational and systemic injustice.
In his book “Red Letter Christians,” Campolo laid out his understanding of the good news of Jesus: “Perhaps because our culture and politics have gone so off course, with values so contrary to those of Jesus, more and more people intuitively recognize that His vision of God’s kingdom – a new world of compassion, justice, integrity and peace – is the Good News they’ve been searching and waiting for.”
As a media organization rooted in progressive Christianity and whose mission is to amplify freedom, inclusivity and justice, GFM endeavors to build on the foundational witness of luminaries like Campolo. Our work would not be possible without his lifetime of service.
We grieve with Capolo’s family and colleagues. We also recommit ourselves to the work of God’s spirit by standing with those who Jesus stands with.
