A driver was arrested in Florida this week after hitting a 16-year-old boy crossing the road in Deltona and fleeing the scene, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
Sarah Wright, 37, of Palm Coast, now faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash with injuries and driving with a suspended license.
The incident occurred just before 4 p.m. at the intersection of Gage Avenue and Noah Street. The teenager, riding his scooter home from Pine Ridge High School, was in the crosswalk when a black Chevrolet Silverado struck him. The boy sustained a serious head laceration and an arm injury but remained conscious and alert after the crash.
A witness, who was checking her mailbox nearby, heard the collision and saw Wright exit her vehicle to check on the teen before returning to her truck. Wright then reportedly attempted to conceal her identity by covering her license plate with paper and tape.
The witness managed to note the first character of the license plate, and a neighborhood Ring camera captured the truck leaving the area. The teen and the witness provided a detailed description of the driver, which helped authorities locate Wright in Flagler County later that evening.
With assistance from the Florida Highway Patrol and the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, Wright was taken into custody and booked into the Flagler County jail on a $3,500 bond.
The injured teen is expected to recover fully.
