President Biden Signs Congress’ Bill to Avoid Shutdown – American Faith

The Senate passed legislation early Saturday morning to avert a government shutdown and ensure federal operations continue through the holiday season. The bill, which was overwhelmingly supported in both chambers of Congress, was signed into law by President Joe Biden shortly after its approval.

The House passed the measure earlier Friday evening with a 366-34 vote, and the Senate followed with an 85-11 vote just after the midnight deadline. Shutdown preparations, which had been underway, were halted as the White House anticipated the bill’s passage.

President Biden acknowledged the bipartisan effort in a statement, noting that the agreement represents a compromise. “This ensures the government can continue to operate at full capacity. That’s good news for the American people,” he said.

The 118-page package will fund the government at current levels until March 14, while providing $100 billion in disaster relief and $10 billion in agricultural aid. The legislation prevents a prolonged shutdown and offers stability as Congress continues to debate longer-term funding priorities.

“We have a unified Republican conference. There’s a unanimous agreement in the room that we need to move forward,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said. “I will not telegraph to you the specific details of that yet because I’ve got a couple of things I’ve gotta wrap up in a few moments upstairs. But I expect that we will be proceeding forward.”

“We will not have a government shutdown,” he emphasized. “And we will meet our obligations for our farmers who need aid, for the disaster victims all over the country, and for making sure that military and essential services, and everyone who relies upon the federal government for a paycheck gets paid over the holidays.”
