IRS Whistleblower Calls for Overhaul of DOJ, Criticizes Hunter Biden Case Handling – American Faith

Gary Shapley, the IRS supervisory special agent who exposed alleged misconduct in the Hunter Biden tax investigation, has called for sweeping reforms at the Department of Justice (DOJ) and his own agency. Shapley’s testimony and subsequent disclosures have raised concerns about political bias and systemic issues within federal institutions.

Shapley told the Daily Caller News Foundation that the DOJ’s handling of the Hunter Biden case exemplifies its “weaponization” and lack of impartiality. He alleged that investigative steps were blocked and that Biden-appointed U.S. attorneys refused to support charges proposed by then-U.S. Attorney David Weiss. Shapley’s recommendations include restructuring DOJ leadership to eliminate bias and ensure accountability.

Hunter Biden’s legal troubles initially seemed headed toward resolution with a plea deal, but the agreement collapsed when a judge questioned provisions granting Biden broad immunity. Shapley and fellow whistleblower IRS special agent Joe Ziegler were later removed from the investigation by special counsel Weiss.

Shapley also criticized the IRS’s leadership structure, calling for a merit-based system rather than the current bureaucratic process, which he claimed promotes individuals based on fabricated resumes. He argued that reforms are necessary to restore public trust and ensure effective oversight.

Both Shapley and Ziegler have faced professional retaliation and legal battles since coming forward. They are fighting a defamation lawsuit against Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, who accused them of illegal conduct in a letter shared with Congress and the media. The whistleblowers contend these attacks have had a chilling effect on others considering stepping forward with information.

The controversy surrounding Hunter Biden culminated in President Joe Biden pardoning his son in December, following convictions on gun and tax charges. Shapley stated the pardon underscored the significance of their disclosures, which brought public attention to alleged preferential treatment for Hunter Biden.

Shapley emphasized that his efforts aim to inform the American public of what he views as systemic failures within federal agencies. “The most important part about this is the American people understanding what actually happened,” he said.
