Coweta County Fire Chief Killed While Aiding Motorist – American Faith

Tragedy struck on Sunday when Coweta County, Georgia, Fire Chief Bart Cauthen was fatally shot while assisting a motorist who had struck a deer. The incident occurred around 5:00 p.m. on County Road 267 in Alabama.

Law enforcement arrived at the scene to discover three individuals shot. Chief Cauthen was pronounced dead, while two others were transported to the hospital for treatment.

According to authorities, the motorist involved in the deer collision came under fire from William Randall Franklin, a nearby resident. Early reports suggest Chief Cauthen was attempting to assist the driver when Franklin opened fire on both men. The motorist, who was armed, managed to return fire, injuring Franklin.

The Coweta County Fire Rescue Department shared their grief on social media, stating:

“Today was Chief Cauthen’s shift at the firehouse and he is already missed! Our team showing their respect!”

WRBL reported that Franklin will face a murder charge following his recovery. The investigation indicates that Franklin’s actions led to a shootout that claimed the life of Chief Cauthen, who had stepped in to provide help at the scene.
