Chicago experienced another weekend of violence under the leadership of Mayor Brandon Johnson (D), with at least 13 people shot, including one fatality.
According to CBS News, the fatal shooting occurred early Saturday morning around 2:00 a.m. A 25-year-old and a 29-year-old were walking in the 6000 block of West Belden Avenue when someone opened fire. The 25-year-old was struck in the head and later succumbed to his injuries. Police suspect the shots came from a passing vehicle.
Breitbart News reported that six of the weekend’s victims were shot within a six-hour period starting at 9:39 p.m. Saturday. Thankfully, none of these victims sustained fatal injuries.
Despite Illinois being one of the most heavily regulated states for firearms, gun violence remains a persistent issue in Chicago. The state enforces an “assault weapons” ban, a red flag law, a 72-hour waiting period for gun purchases, and a Firearms Owners Identification (FOID) card requirement. Acquiring a FOID card involves a comprehensive background check conducted by Illinois State Police.
Illinois’ strict gun control laws have earned it the No. 3 ranking in the country from the gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety, which is affiliated with Michael Bloomberg. Yet the persistent violence in Chicago raises questions about the effectiveness of these regulations in curbing crime.
The weekend’s events underscore ongoing concerns about public safety in the city, as residents and officials continue to grapple with gun violence despite the presence of some of the nation’s toughest firearm laws.
