Liberal Women Are Lonelier and Less Happy Than Conservatives – American Faith

A recent American Family Survey found that liberal women report significantly higher levels of loneliness and unhappiness compared to their conservative counterparts. Only 12 percent of liberal women between the ages of 18 and 40 reported being satisfied with their lives, while 37 percent of conservative women expressed the same sentiment.

The study also revealed that these women are nearly three times more likely than conservatives to report feeling lonely multiple times per week. Marriage rates were also notably higher among conservative women, with 51 percent being married compared to just 31 percent of liberal women. Conservative women were also more likely to prioritize family, church attendance, and traditional gender roles.

Brad Wilcox, a fellow at the Institute for Family Studies and professor at the University of Virginia, explained that conservative women are less likely to see themselves as victims of external forces and more likely to view themselves as responsible for their own happiness. He noted that liberal young women are often disconnected from traditional institutions such as marriage and religion, which provide a sense of meaning, direction, and social support.

Wilcox further emphasized that lower rates of marriage and churchgoing among liberal women may contribute to their increased reports of loneliness, which in turn lowers their overall happiness levels.

The American Family Survey, which polled 3,000 American women, was conducted in 2024 and released earlier this month. The findings align with broader research indicating that strong social bonds, faith, and family life contribute to overall well-being. Conservative women, who are more likely to be engaged in church communities and married life, benefit from the stability and support these institutions provide. In contrast, left-leaning women, who report lower participation in these areas, may face increased isolation and a lack of structured support systems. Experts suggest that cultural shifts emphasizing individualism over traditional community ties may be exacerbating the trend among younger liberal women.
