Macron Calls Emergency EU Meeting to Discuss President Trump

French President Emmanuel Macron has convened an emergency meeting of European leaders to address the implications of President Donald Trump’s policies, according to a European official.

Politico reports that Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski hinted at the meeting during the Munich Security Conference on Saturday. Two EU officials confirmed the gathering will take place in Paris on Monday.

“I’m very glad that President Macron has called our leaders to Paris,” Sikorski said, emphasizing the need for a serious discussion on Trump’s actions. He described Trump’s approach as “reconnaissance through battle,” a tactic of pushing boundaries to gauge responses before adjusting strategy. “And we need to respond,” he added.

Sikorski, known for his candid views on U.S. politics, has previously acknowledged Trump’s push for NATO countries to boost defense spending and compared President Biden’s decline to the fall of ancient Rome.

Despite past tensions, Macron has remained diplomatic toward Trump. Following Trump’s election victory, Macron posted on X: “Congratulations, President @realDonaldTrump. Ready to work together as we did for four years. With your convictions and mine. With respect and ambition. For more peace and prosperity.”

As Europe braces for shifts in U.S. foreign policy, Macron’s emergency meeting signals growing urgency among European leaders to navigate the evolving transatlantic relationship.

In December 2024, Macron welcomed Trump to Paris with a display of presidential ceremony, marking a renewed phase in their relationship after Trump’s return to the political spotlight.

The two leaders met at the Élysée Palace ahead of a high-profile event celebrating the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, five years after a devastating fire nearly destroyed the iconic structure.

Macron extended a warm reception, including a red-carpet welcome typically reserved for sitting American presidents. The two leaders exchanged multiple handshakes and gestures of camaraderie, with Trump praising their “great relationship.”
