Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick dismissed concerns of an impending U.S. recession during an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, predicting strong economic growth instead.
Host Kristen Welker pointed to declining consumer sentiment, rising inflation, and warnings from major financial institutions like JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs, which have suggested a recession is increasingly likely within the next 12 months. She asked Lutnick whether Americans should prepare for an economic downturn.
“Absolutely not,” Lutnick responded. “Anybody who bets against Donald Trump, it’s like the same people who thought Donald Trump wasn’t a winner a year ago. Donald Trump is a winner. He’s going to win for the American people. That’s just the way it’s going to be.”
Lutnick rejected the idea of an economic slowdown, instead predicting that global trade policies under Trump will fuel historic growth. He emphasized Trump’s strategy of enforcing reciprocal tariffs, which he argued would lead other countries to lower their trade barriers.
“There’s going to be no recession in America,” Lutnick continued. “What there’s going to be is global tariffs coming down because President Trump has said, ‘You want to charge us 100%? We’re going to charge you 100%.’ You know what they say? ‘No, no, no, don’t charge us 100%. We’ll bring ours down.’”
Lutnick pointed to the influx of investment into the U.S. economy, citing $1.3 trillion in new projects. He argued that for every trillion dollars invested, GDP grows by 1%, fueling job creation and economic expansion.
“Donald Trump is bringing growth to America,” he concluded. “I would never bet on recession. No chance.”
