Even before his foray into politics in 2015, Donald Trump was known as someone who commands attention and lives by the marketing maxim, “No publicity is bad publicity.” A new Pew Research Center survey has found that he is getting the attention he desires, with 71% of respondents saying they are closely following news about his second administration.

At this point in Biden’s term, 66% said they closely followed news about his administration. However, there is a nine-percentage-point difference between those following Trump “very closely” and those who did early in Biden’s administration (31% for Trump, 22% for  Biden).

There is virtually no partisan disparity among those following news about Trump’s second term.

Among Republicans and Democrats, 32% are following “very closely,” with 42% of Republicans and 40% of Democrats following “fairly closely.” A fifth (20%) of both Republicans and Democrats are following “not too closely,” with 5% of Republicans and 8% of Democrats “not closely at all.”

For those following the Trump administration closely, two-thirds (66%) say they are doing so because they are concerned about what the administration is doing. This is true for 88% of Democrats and 45% of Republicans.

The difficulty of avoiding the news was cited as a reason by 43% of respondents. A quarter (25%) say they pay attention because it is entertaining.

Among those not closely following the news from the administration, almost half (49%) say they are “worn out” by the amount of information. More than one in ten (13%) do not follow because they “trust the administration to make good decisions.”
