Two new bishops have been installed by China’s state-controlled “patriotic church,” bypassing the Pope and violating the controversial secret Sino-Vatican Agreement.
On Apr. 28 and 29, Fathers Wu Jianlin and Li Jianlin were appointed bishops of Shanghai and Xinxiang without papal approval.
As reported by The Gateway Pundit, these appointments once again expose the Vatican’s increasing submission to the Chinese Communist Party, and they come with the Vatican’s silence—if not complicity.

The article, written by Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, warns that these events represent “a grave wound to the unity of the Catholic Church.”
He writes, “Arrests, re-education camps, physical and psychological torture and all possible forms of discrimination against lay people, religious, priests and Catholic bishops have increased precisely after the signing of the secret Agreement.”
Despite the suffering of the underground Church in China, the late Pope Francis offered no defense of Cardinal Joseph Zen when he was arrested and tried, saying only, “I don’t feel like calling China anti-democratic.”
What once was considered “grave disobedience” under Pope Benedict XVI has now become standard operating procedure under Francis.
Shen Bin, the state-appointed “bishop” of Shanghai, openly advocates for the CCP’s religious model, stating, “Encourage the Church in China to explore the use of traditional Chinese culture in the expression of the Catholic faith… integrate elements of traditional Chinese culture into the liturgy.”
Viganò warns that this Sinicization effort is not about inculturation, but about reshaping doctrine to suit Communist ideology.
Archbishop Viganò also points to credible claims that the Vatican receives $1.6 billion annually from the Chinese government. He draws clear lines between this financial dependency, the betrayal of Chinese Catholics, and the broader globalist agenda that seeks to “Chinesize” the world through surveillance, control, and technocratic domination.

“The globalist elite… considers China as a laboratory in which the communist totalitarian regime makes possible, by force, what Western democracies cannot achieve,” Viganò states.
This is not merely political overreach. It’s spiritual warfare. The Church’s compromise with tyrants does not preserve its mission, it poisons it.
Archbishop Viganò’s exposé reminds us: faithfulness to Christ must come before favor with Caesar. May the underground Church in China find strength to endure—and may the global church find courage to repent.
