Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is launching his 2024 presidential campaign with an unusual kickoff Wednesday night – a live interview on Twitter.
The public announcement is set to take place at 6:00 PM Eastern time during an audio-only conversation with Elon Musk on Twitter Spaces.
DeSantis filed his declaration of candidacy for president with the Federal Election Commission Wednesday afternoon before his online conversation with Musk.
Former President Trump’s team wasted no time calling out DeSantis for launching his campaign via Twitter, calling it, “out of touch.”
The former president has been very vocal about DeSantis, and took to his own social media platform, Truth Social, early Wednesday morning, saying the Florida governor can’t win the general election, or even the party’s nomination. Trump also pointed to past issues, accusing DeSantis of voting to get rid of Social Security and to impose a national sales tax.

DeSantis has been busy laying the groundwork by campaigning in key primary states like Iowa and New Hampshire, working to connect with voters and testing out his campaign message.
“We need to restore sanity to our society, we need to restore normalcy to our communities, and we need to restore integrity to our institutions,” DeSantis said during an event earlier this month in Wisconsin.
The latest polls show Trump expanding his lead in the Republican primary with DeSantis his closest rival.
One of the Florida governor’s greatest challenges will likely be finding a way to beat the former president without alienating his supporters. In his first campaign for governor, DeSantis ran with Trump’s support, something both Trump and other 2024 presidential contenders are already trying to use to their advantage.
Beyond Trump and DeSantis, the current GOP field includes former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson.
