House Speaker Considering Including SAVE Act in Funding Bill – American Faith

According to a report from Punchbowl News, House Speaker Mike Johnson is considering including the SAVE Act in a government funding bill.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act requires proof of citizenship in order to register to vote in a federal election.

The stopgap spending bill would extend government spending until March 2025.

Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) previously voiced his support for the act’s inclusion in a funding bill, telling Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo, “So with the SAVE Act, what we’re saying is we should require nothing less to vote in federal elections than you have to establish when you start a new job.”

“When you attach that to a spending bill, and that’s the best way to move that through, to make sure that the 10 million plus illegal immigrants who have come in in the last 3 and a half years, and the estimated roughly 30 million noncitizens total in the United States aren’t voting in this November’s election,” he explained.

Lee also supported the effort in a statement on X, writing “hats off” to Johnson.

The possible inclusion of the SAVE Act is also backed by the House Freedom Caucus. The congressional group wrote in August that the “Continuing Resolution should include the SAVE Act – as called for by President Trump – to prevent non-citizens from voting to preserve free and fair elections in light of the millions of illegal aliens imported by the Biden-Harris administration over the last four years.”
