(LifeSiteNews) — “Follow the science,” we’re often told these days by our moral and intellectual superiors. These days, however, science has become the servant of ideology. Bill Nye “the Science Guy,” for example, is all in on transgender ideology. So, as it turns out, is astrophysicist and author Neil deGrasse Tyson, one of the most recognizable science figures in pop culture. His resume is impressive — Harvard, the University of Texas at Austin, and Columbia. None of that, unfortunately, has prevented him from obediently parroting the talking points of the transgender movement.

In a recent viral video, Tyson let loose on the ignorant peasants who still believe that men cannot become women and women cannot become men. “My point is that apparently the XX and XY chromosomes are insufficient,” he sneered condescendingly. “Because when we wake up in the morning, we exaggerate whatever feature we want to portray — the gender of our choice. Either the one you’re assigned, the one you choose to be, whatever it is.”

Notice the fact that Tyson uses all the trendy phrases, such as the idea that your gender is “assigned at birth,” as if the doctor takes a random guess as to whether the child is a boy or a girl.

Tyson goes further. Those who reject transgender ideology are, in his view, not only unscientific — but downright unAmerican. “And so now, just to tie a bow on this, I say to you: somewhere I read — I think I read — that the United States was a land where we have the pursuit of happiness,” Tyson said, his voice rising. “Suppose no matter my chromosomes, today I feel 80% female, 20% male. I’m gonna put makeup on, I’m gonna do this. Tomorrow I might feel 80% male. I’ll remove the makeup and wear a muscle shirt. Why do you care?! What business is it of yours to require that I fulfil your inability to think of gender on a spectrum?”

It is important to notice what he’s doing here. First, he is making the radical assertion that femininity and masculinity are merely costumes to put on or discard at will. What does it mean to “feel” like you are female, if you are not female? How can someone who is not a woman possibly know what it means to feel like a woman? How could Tyson the Science Guy possibly know what it would be like to feel “80% female”? The fundamental premise of his absurd rant is that people who are male or female can truly know by feeling what it is like to be a member of the opposite sex. This isn’t just junk science. It doesn’t even stand up to the basic test of logic. The case he is making is dead on arrival because his premises don’t work.

But second of all, it is important to address his weirdly passionate libertarian demand that we explain “why we care” that trans activists are reshaping our understanding of gender and why it is “business of ours.” I suspect Tyson is intelligent enough to realize why people care. We care because the junk ideology he is selling is resulting in children being castrated and sterilized. We care because families are being torn apart as their children are indoctrinated into believing that they can change sexes. We care because the very nature of reality is being called into question by ideologues with profound social ramifications. We care because we have a vested interest in what sort of society we live in and what our children are taught.

As Chloe Cole, a young girl who says her “childhood was ruined” by gender ideology and who has de-transitioned after getting a double mastectomy in an attempt to change sexes, noted, “It’s my business because you’re using 1950s gender stereotypes to justify the ideology that leads to sterilization and mastectomies of 15-year-old girls who just don’t fit in. Girls like me. Because the only thing that you’ve established in this video was that men wear trousers and tank tops but woman, they wear lipstick and dresses,” Cole said. “The idea that people can be percentages of either male or female just further reinforces the fact that biological sex is a binary. There’s only two. There may only be two sexes, but there are an infinite number of personalities. I mean, it really doesn’t take a degree in astrophysics to know that.”
