Acceptance: The First Step Towards Healing – The Stream

Clergy abuse victim Faith Hakesley, of the Ruth Institute, writes in her Advice from a Survivor blog:

When people ask me what the first step towards healing is, my answer is acceptance. Acceptance is necessary for anyone trying to come to terms with any kind of traumatic event. It is not only the first step towards healing but is also oftentimes the hardest.

Before any healing can take place, you need to be able to accept that what happened, happened. You don’t have to like it – of course no one wants to suffer – but acknowledging and accepting any kind of trauma is necessary before we can move forward despite the difficulties that we have suffered. We may want to ignore the difficulties we face, but this is not healthy.

Ministering to the Addicted and Betrayed

Bruce and Jeanne Hannemann minister to porn addicts and their spouses. Bruce, an author and public speaker, frequently shares his own recovery story and now heads ReclaimSexualHealth.com. Jeanne, trained in problematic sexual behavior and betrayal trauma, is an author, radio personality, and speaker who runs the website, NavigateBetrayal.com.

Bruce was introduced to pornography at age nine. The knowledge that it was bad and needed to remain a secret made it all the more compelling and difficult to quit. He had moderate success with different addiction programs throughout his adulthood, but kept backsliding until he discovered the brain science of change.

The science of what pornography does to the brain, much the same as illegal drugs, made sense to Bruce, and he was able to ‘reprogram’ himself. These brain science exercises are now used in his Reclaim program.

Jeanne also recounts her betrayal trauma of learning Bruce was addicted to internet porn. “That drew me into a trauma like I have never known…. They now label this as post traumatic stress disorder. And I was full blown into that.”

Jeanne had to go through her own healing and recovery process. Together, they now run a retreat center.

“All too often what happens in this kind of circumstance is you know there’s a need to get away from each other for a while, so one gets an apartment. Then you’re on that slippery slope to a full separation and divorce,” Jeanne explains. “We operate this retreat center where people can be taken care of by people who understand the problem and support and encourage them, so they can go back into that relationship if they’re both willing to work on it.”

“I know there’s a lot of men out there who are struggling with this issue, way more than want to admit it,” Bruce says. “I want them to know that there is hope. There is healing. They do not have to be stuck with the lifestyle that they have right now.”

“Not only did our marriage survive, but it’s a much better marriage than it ever was before,” Jeanne says.

No, Mr. Ramaswamy, Homosexuality Is Not “Hardwired From Birth”

“Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is still spreading the myth that homosexuality is an innate characteristic ‘hardwired’ at birth,” said Ruth Institute President Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D.

“He first made the absurd claim in an NPR interview on May 14 and recently repeated it in an All-In podcast, when he said he was ‘quite sympathetic’ to the notion that ‘the sex of the person that you’re attracted to is hardwired on the day you were born.’”

Morse observed: “Although Mr. Ramaswamy has a degree in biology, this belief is not consistent with the science. There is no gay gene. That is the conclusion of the most recent and thorough examination of the human genome in 2019. The evidence from studies of identical twins is also inconsistent with the claim that sexual orientation is an inborn immutable trait.”

Even the pro-homosexual American Psychological Association admitted: “There is no consensus among scientists about the exact reasons an individual develops a heterosexual, bisexual, gay or lesbian orientation. Although much research has examined the possible genetic, hormonal, developmental, social and cultural influences on sexual orientation, no findings have emerged that permit scientists to conclude that sexual orientation is determined by any particular factor or factors.”

“And yet Ramaswamy claims homosexuality is hardwired at birth,” Morse charged. “The thriving ex-gay movement refutes that dogma. How does someone change their hardwiring?”

“The Supreme Court’s 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision was premised on the belief that homosexuality is an innate characteristic, like race. Remove that prop and the entire structure collapses.”

“The nature of homosexuality plays a role in the most contentious political debates of our time, including pubic school indoctrination and whether couples who refuse to subscribe to the gay ideology will be allowed to serve as foster parents.”

“Vivek Ramaswamy has campaigned as a candidate who courageously embraces the truth, wherever it leads him. While we applaud his stand in favor of the truth, we are quite concerned that he is ill-informed on this matter. If he expects to be taken seriously, he should rethink his position on the nature of homosexuality,” Morse concluded.
