A Growing Number of Americans Get News on TikTok

More Americans are turning to TikTok as their news source, according to a Pew Research report released on November 15.

Nearly half (43%) of TikTok users get their news from the social media site. This is up from 33% in 2022. The social media platform, primarily known for short-form video sharing, is increasingly used by U.S. adults for news consumption.

While the web traffic for other social media sites has decreased or stayed the same over the past three years, the number of Americans who regularly turn to TikTok for news on current events has increased more than fourfold, from 3% in 2020 to 14% in 2023.

TikTok and Facebook users are now “just as likely” to use the site for news. However, TikTok users did not outpace users of X, formerly known as Twitter, and are “less likely” to get their news from the site.

“Among adults, those ages 18 to 29 are most likely to say they regularly get news on TikTok,” Katerina Eva Matsa, a director of news and information research at Pew Research Center, writes. “About a third of Americans in this age group (32%) say they regularly get news there, a higher share than in years before. This compares with 15% of those ages 30 to 49, 7% of those 50 to 64 and just 3% of those 65 and older.
