U.S. Agencies to Probe Airline Loyalty Programs for Consumer Protection – American Faith

The U.S. Department of Transportation and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced plans on Monday to host a public hearing aimed at examining airline loyalty programs as part of an initiative to shield consumers from deceptive and unfair practices.

The hearing, scheduled for May 9, will convene regulators, airline executives, consumer advocates, and banking officials. Representatives from Allegiant Air and Breeze Airways will participate on behalf of the airline industry.

Airline loyalty programs encompass offerings such as airline credit cards and frequent flyer programs.

In December, the Transportation Department disclosed an ongoing evaluation of the frequent flyer programs operated by major U.S. airlines to identify potential instances of deceptive or unfair practices, underscoring heightened oversight of the airline sector.

In March, the Department of Transportation announced a review of how the ten largest U.S. airlines collect, manage, and utilize passengers’ personal information.
