24 Hour Fitness Welcomes Pride Symbols as ‘Freedom of Expression’ – American Faith

An internal memo from 24 Hour Fitness dated from May 2023 has circulated on social media, revealing the center implemented a policy that banned patriotic symbols.

Pride symbols could be worn freely while U.S.-centric materials were only permitted on holidays.

“We’ve committed to creating a more inclusive environment at 24 Hour Fitness, recognizing that we have work to do to become stronger allies in support of those who are impacted by systemic oppression and inequality,” the memo reads. “To create a healthy, happy world within our clubs and other spaces, we support our team members bringing their full selves to work every day, including their freedom of expression.”

Several of the “approved movements and/or social causes” listed for “approved expressions” include:

  • “Black Lives Matter/BLM words.”
  • “‘Pride’ and or pride rainbow logo.”
  • “Juneteenth logo, symbol or date on Juneteenth (June 19).”
  • “Flag or United States logo” on federal holidays like Memorial Day, Flag Day, July 4th, Veterans Day, Patriots Day, etc.”

The memo also discusses bathroom use by transgender individuals. It addresses the question, “What if the transgender member or team member has not yet undergone gender reassignment surgery?”

The memo says that surgery is “irrelevant,” adding that members can use “whichever locker room they prefer.”

Another fitness center, Planet Fitness, was widely criticized earlier this year after revoking a woman’s membership amid a transgender controversy.

The woman took a photo of a biological man in the female locker room.

Planet Fitness chief corporate affairs officer McCall Gosselin said at the time that the company is “committed to creating an inclusive environment.”

“Our gender identity non-discrimination policy, states that members and guests may use the gym facilities that best align with their sincere, self-reported gender identity. The member who posted on social media violated our mobile device policy that prohibits taking photos of individuals in the locker room, which resulted in their membership being terminated.”
