Fifteen senior Biden aides were summoned by House Republicans on Thursday due to worries that the administration would be carrying out a partisan “scheme” to help Democrats win the 2024 election.

Subpoenas were issued by House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil (R-WI) requesting records of plans implemented in response to an executive order issued by President Joe Biden. The directive instructed government agency heads to create strategies to “encourage voter registration and participation.” The heads of agencies were instructed to draft “strategic plans” outlining how their particular organization would boost voter participation. 

“Party politics exist in elections, but they shouldn’t ever influence how elections are run.” Election integrity is threatened and public confidence is lowered when federal workers from the Biden Administration are permitted to overcrowd election administration sites, according to Steil. “The Biden Administration is attempting to tip the scales ahead of 2024 with this Executive Order.”

The Wisconsin Republican continued, “I will continue to work to provide transparency and accountability on this Administration’s latest scheme as Congress did not appropriate taxpayer funds for partisan activities.” 

The Commerce Department, Homeland Security, Defense, Justice, Education, Energy, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Labor, Office of Management and Budget, State, Transportation, Treasury, and Agriculture departments are among the fifteen agencies that were subpoenaed.

Steil stated in his letter that lawmakers were thinking about approving a legislative repeal of Biden’s directive, but they needed to see the plans in order to make that decision. The agencies have until June 26 to submit their proposals in order to comply with the requirement. 

“Strategic plans and other documents requested will inform the Committee on what additional legislation, if any, needs to be considered to clarify that the NRA does not enable executive branch agencies to focus on voter registration,” Steil wrote as the Committee carried out its investigation.

He stated that regarding some of the actions agencies had previously taken to carry out Biden’s order, the committee had significant reservations.

Some agencies have taken activities in the past few months that were probably outlined in their strategic plans. Examples include the Small Business Administration’s entry into a voter registration deal with Michigan and the Department of Education’s new federal work-study requirements,” the author stated.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) was subpoenaed by the House Committee on Small Business last month for allegedly trying to “register Democrat voters” in Michigan. Following the announcement of a voter registration partnership between the SBA and the Michigan state government, a subpoena was issued.
