New York City migrant families are being offered $4,000 grants to assist them in moving out of city shelters.

The initiative, announced by city officials, is part of an effort to help these families transition to more permanent housing solutions.

“The city is using every tool at its disposal to implement innovative and cost-effective solutions to help recently-arrived asylum seekers residing in shelters takes the next steps in their journey,” a Department of Social Services spokesperson said.

“Since December, DSS has been working with a few not-for-profit providers operating emergency sites to pilot a new effort to reduce barriers to obtaining housing by helping asylum-seeking families who have identified permanent housing with the upfront cost of moving into their new home,” the spokesperson continued.

The program, however, faces criticism due to concerns over its long-term sustainability amid the growing migrant crisis and shelter capacity issues.

Critics argue that while the grant may provide temporary relief, it doesn’t address the broader challenges related to housing and immigration.
