Farming and Agriculture Most Favored U.S. Industry

According to recently released results from the Gallup Poll Social Series, farming and agriculture have bypassed restaurants as the most well-regarded industries in the United States.

Though popular among more than half of respondents, the restaurant industry has taken a significant hit since the previous year’s survey, with a nine-point decrease in favorable ratings between 2023 (61%) and 2024 (52%). Farming and agriculture saw a 5% increase in positive ratings, with 59% in 2023 and 64% in 2024.

Aside from Farming/Agriculture and restaurants, the computer industry (52%) was the only sector with a favorable view among more than half of respondents.

The grocery and publishing industries saw a decrease in positive views among respondents. In 2023, 41% of respondents rated grocers favorable, but that rate dropped to 33% in 2024. The publishing industry dropped seven points between 2023 (37%) and 2024 (30%).

Favorable opinions of the sports industry increased dramatically in the previous year, with 31% in 2023 and 42% in 2024 expressing a positive view. The retail sector also saw an increase of 6%, from 36% in 2023 to 42% in 2024.

Notably, for an election year, positive views about the federal government, while still low at 26%, saw a five percent increase in favorability from the previous year.

The pharmaceutical industry remains the least popular of all sectors in the U.S., with only a fifth (20%) of respondents expressing a positive view. This is up from 18% in 2023. Other industries that didn’t break the 30% favorability threshold in 2024 include Legal (28%), Advertising/Public Relations (26%) and Real Estate (27%).
