Earthquakes Hit California, Japan on New Year’s Day – American Faith

Southern California was hit with a magnitude 4.1 earthquake centered near Rancho Palos Verdes.

Japan experienced a magnitude 7.6 earthquake near Honshu with several aftershocks.

The two earthquakes are unrelated to each other.

“Completely unrelated to Japan, SoCal just had a M4.1 offshore from Palos Verdes. Not near any known fault. Way too small to even talk about tsunamis. Japan’s M7.5 is 100,000 times bigger than a M4.1,” wrote seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones on X.

While there have been no reports of damages from the California earthquake, Japan’s earthquake led to tsunami alerts.

The high-level tsunami warning, which has since been dropped, was just one of several issues following the earthquake, according to the Associated Press.

The event led to several homes being damaged, trapping residents.

Fires also broke out, destroying buildings.

Axios reported that more than 30,000 households have lost electricity.
