AUGUSTA, Maine (LifeSiteNews) — Gender-confused teenagers in Maine whose parents refuse to affirm their mistaken gender identity will be able to receive sterilizing hormones without their parents’ consent, according to a new law signed this week.
Despite strenuous Republican pushback, Democratic Gov. Janet Mills signed the new measure on Tuesday.
Maine Public reported ythe law will allow 16- and 17-year-olds in the Pine Tree State to receive cross-sex hormones “if they have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, have received counseling, are experiencing harm from not receiving care, and have parents that refuse to support treatment.”
The law also requires teens to “receive counseling on the benefits and potential consequences of hormone therapy,” according to the outlet.
As LifeSiteNews has reported, in addition to asserting a false reality that one’s sex can be changed, transgender surgeries and drugs have been linked to permanent physical and psychological damage, including cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, cancer, stroke, infertility, and suicidality. Further, studies indicate that over 80% of children suffering from gender dysphoria outgrow it on their own by late adolescence without surgical or pharmaceutical intervention.
Republican lawmakers attempted to combat the Maine law, pointing out that it cuts against parental rights.
“I have a little problem with a 16-year-old being able to make this dramatic of a change to their body, however, they can’t buy a ticket to a rated R movie without their parents’ permission,” Republican Rep. Lucas Lanigan of Sanford said, according to The National Desk.
“I just feel this is another bill that we’re just going too far on where we’re taking the rights of parents away,” he said.
Despite Republicans’ complaints, however, Maine’s Democrat-led legislature approved the bill in a largely party-line 73-60 vote last month.
Gov. Mills signed the measure July 11 without issuing a press release.
Mills is an outspoken proponent of the LGBT agenda.
Last year, she signed a proclamation officially declaring June as Pride Month in the state of Maine, The National Desk pointed out. The outlet added that the pro-LGBT governor also took part in a “rainbow pride flag raising ceremony” this year.
Mills has promoted an anti-life agenda for years, introducing and later signing a bill to allow non-doctors to perform abortions and legalizing euthanasia.

She is expected to sign a new law just forwarded to her desk by the legislature that will authorize licensed physicians to kill preborn babies at any stage of development so long as the abortion is deemed “medically necessary,” LifeSiteNews previously reported. Pro-lifers point out that the deliberate killing of a preborn baby is never medically necessary.
If signed, LD 1619 will make Maine one of the most dangerous states in the country for preborn babies.
